Yedakumeri Trek
It has been one of my resolutions for the year to do atleast one trip every month and fortunately i have been able to achieve this untill now, and this months it was Yedakumeri - also popularly known as "The Green route" along the Bangalore-Mangalore Railway Track. This trek started off as a part of the usual AMC trekking group( 8 of us ), but after the Bandipur trip's success i invited the Applibase team and other friends to join us to the trek. I was actually expecting most of those who showed intrest initially, to drop off later once they realise the difficult level of the trek, but i was terribly wrong, soon the number of people joining the group increased!!. The situation got out of hand as the date of journey approached and i started rejecting all the new comers, still ended up with a huge group of 35 people with more then 15 first-time trekkers. Though i was skeptical of the first-timers enjoying the trek i was sure they will enjoy each others company, and since i knew there were escape routes at many places i decided to go ahead with the team. After three weeks of preparation ( booking bus, sending numerous mails and arranging for mats and sleeping bags for the rest of the team ) we finally did the trek this weekdend ( 26th and 27th of March ).

In two days of trek we covered 18(first day) + 18(second day )KM by foot along the Mangalore-Bangalore railway track near sakleshpura, which has been abandoned for the last 10 Years for various reasons ( mostly political ). The trek was very exhausting and most of the first-timers decided to quit after the first day itself. But a smaller team of 19 members continued with the earlier plan and completed the trek on the second day. [info]jace, [info]haas, [info]mat_attack and Anant have all written about their experience in their blogs. For the details of the trip please refer to their blogs.

I had a great weekend, this trek was different from all my previous treks, looking forward to do more of these kinds of treks as well. I definitly plan to repeat the route in the monsoon, the western ghtas should be a sight to the eyes in Monsoons. Now iam planning to do the KumarParvata trek next month, hope that will be as much fun as this was. I would like to thank the whole group for co-operating and helping to make the trip a success.

Update: Sidharth has written about a small scary incident that occured during the trek here

Hi,
I think you are a bit late - now the trains have started plying on those tracks and trekking might not be advisable. Anyway following are the info you asked for:

how to reach from Bangalore?
Take the bus to Subramanya and get down at Donigal ( there is a railway station there so all the bus drivers know about this place ).

starting Point??
Donigal station is the starting point - you get a mud road on the right of the road where the bus stops just get onto the tracks and start walking along the tracks. You will reach Siribagilu ( end point - around 22 km from Subramanya ) after walking on the tracks for 48 kms. So be prepared for a very long walk on the tracks.

wr to stay??
usually people do this trip over two days first day they reach Yedakumeri station and camp there in the old unused rooms which are filled with rats/dirt and lots of burnt wood. Since the group was large ( 35 members ) few of us slept on the platform itself - this might not be possible anymore as the trains pass through this station in the night. Second day we started from yedakumeri ( 15 of us - rest took a route through the forest to reach the highway)and reach Siribagilu station at around 2pm. From siribagilu you can hike a ride in any vehicle and reach Subramanya.
